- Utilize good financial acumen to ensure that sound judgment and initiative is used for sensible underwriting of mortgages and business loans.
- Escalate loans to the next authority level with a recommendation for a decision.
- Gather and/or review background information on loan applicants reviewing credit rating reports; verify employment, debts, estimate monthly payments for any outstanding debts not listed and add them to debts on the application.
- Calculate debt-to-income ratios on loan applicants, and calculate how much of a loan applicant’s debt is secured or unsecured.
- Review, analyse and follow up mortgage loan requests.
- Review, analyse and follow up business loan requests.
- Provides financial advice/guidance to members.
- Assists in the preparation of reports on mortgages and business loans.
- Co-ordinate with relevant departments on the security and disbursements of mortgages and business to ensure compliance.
- Maintains service levels for all underwriting turnaround times as set by management.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of general economic conditions or changing trends that may affect the credit union’s competitiveness for providing their loan products.
- Supports the sale, delivery and cross selling of services and products to members.
- Assists in the resolution of members’ complaints.
- Review and approve loans within the assigned In House Loans Committee limit.
- Review and approve loans within an individual assigned limit.
- Review and forward loans (in conjunction with the In House Loans Committee) to the External Credit Committee for decision.
- Review and underwrite staff loans. Also to attend Extra Ordinary Credit Committee.
- Performs any other duties ancillary or related to the foregoing.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Banking/Finance or a related field
- At least 3 years’ experience in either or a combination of credit underwriting of business
- Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
- Work may require occasional weekends and/or evening work.
- Frequent travel will be required.
- Infrequent exposure to outdoor elements may be required.
- Good organisational and/or project management skills.
