Thrift Club Biennial Essay Contest

Why is it important for young people to be taught how to be financially responsible?

Tell us if your parents teach you about managing money and whether or not you think money management should be taught as a subject at school.


Contest Rules and Guidelines


The competition will run from August 20 – September 21, 2018.


Entrants must be local Primary and Secondary School students, 10 – 16 years old.

Judging Categories:

Junior (10 – 12)

Senior (13 – 16)


The contest has two main objectives:

  • to engage our young adult membership
  • to select a new 2018/2019 Thrift Club Advisory Committee - seven (7) spaces are available on the on the Committee for persons 13 – 16 years old.

Credit Union membership is not required, however, candidates in the 13 – 16 age category, who wish to be considered for a chance to serve on the Thrift Club Advisory Committee, must be members of our Credit Union.

If not a current member of the Barbados Public Workers’ Credit Union Ltd.’s Thrift Club, applicants must be eligible for membership within the Credit Union. Refer to eligibility requirements via






Additionally, BPWCCUL will award a special cash prize to the value of $500 to the School of the 1st place winner in each category. NB. Only one prize per School.

Prizes will be presented during a prize giving ceremony.

Winners must agree to have their names and photos published in BPWCCUL / Thrift Club publications – this includes but is not limited to our Thrift Club webpage and Facebook page.


All essays will be judged on Content, Creativity, Style and Grammar. Essays must be the original work of the applicant. Sources if utilized should be referenced.


Selection of candidates to serve on the Thrift Club Advisory Committee will not be limited to contest winners i.e. candidates may be selected from the general pool of contest submissions, within the 13-16 age group.

Only seven (7) spaces are available and Committee members will serve on the Committee for a period of two years, as long as they remain within the relevant age group.

Where the list of candidates in this category exceeds the seven (7) spaces available, an opportunity for voting by the general thrift club body may be provided.

Thrift Club Advisory Committee members perform the following roles:

  • Advises the Credit Union regarding the implementation of Thrift Club related activities
  • Represent and promote the interest of all Thrift Club members
  • Assists with the communication and dissemination of public information related to Thrift Club and the Credit Union membership generally.

This is an excellent opportunity for young persons between 13 – 16 years to develop leadership skills.
