43 BARBADOS PUBLIC WORKERS’ CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED | NON-CONSOLIDATED ANNUAL REPORT 2018 BARBADOS PUBLIC WORKERS' CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LIMITED Notes to the Non-consolidated Financial Statements For the year ended March 31, 2018 (Expressed in Barbados dollars) 28 2. Accounting Policies, continued (e) Standards in issue but not yet effective, continued IFRS 9 Financial Instruments (cont’d) (vi) Transition (cont’d) • The Credit Union will take advantage of the exemption allowing it not to restate comparative information for prior periods with respect to classification and measurement (including impairment) changes. Differences in the carrying amounts of financial assets and financial liabilities resulting from the adoption of IFRS 9 will generally be recognised in retained earnings and reserves as at April 1, 2018. • The following assessments have to be made on the basis of the facts and circumstances that exist at the date of initial application. - The determination of the business model within which a financial asset is held. - The designation and revocation of previous designations of certain financial assets and financial liabilities as measured at FVTPL. - The designation of certain investments in equity instruments not held for trading as at FVOCI. IFRS 16 Leases IFRS 16 replaces existing leases guidance, including IAS 17 Leases, IFRIC 4 Determining whether an Arrangement contains a Lease, SIC-15 Operating Leases – Incentives and SIC-27 Evaluating the Substance of Transactions Involving the Legal Form of a Lease. IFRS 16 introduces a single, on-balance sheet lease accounting model for lessees. A lessee recognises a right-of-use asset representing its right to use the underlying asset and a lease liability representing its obligation to make lease payments. There are recognition exemptions for short-term leases and leases of low-value items. Lessor accounting remains similar to the current standard – i.e. lessors continue to classify leases as finance or operating leases.
